BIOGRAPHY
When I was a very young girl, I used to hear music in my head when I was falling asleep. I soon learned that if I tried to listen to it, it would go away, but that if I stopped trying, it would play softly in my ear as I drifted off to sleeep.
I have always loved music and dancing. I began studying dance at age nine, and guitar at age twelve. At age fourteen, I had a transcendental experience while dancing and concluded that it was my destiny to become a dancer. After highschool, I enrolled in a professional dance training program in Victoria, BC, under the direction of Constantine Darling, a former soloist with Les Ballets-jazz de Montreal. I studied with him for three years and was a promising student, earning praise from such visiting artists as Christopher House and Serge Bennathan (prominent choreographers in Canada). I earned two awards for my original choreography in local music festivals and was occasionally entrusted to substitute teach the advanced technique class in Constantine's absence.
However, an injury at age 22 ended my dreams of a professional dance career, and I turned to music for my creative outlet. A series of (mis)adventures led me to Seattle's Pike Place market, where, at age 26, I began earning my living playing guitar and singing on a street corner. People have always liked my songs and I had no trouble finding great musicians to play with. However, having little formal training in music, I was easily embarrassed by difficult music theory questions such as "What key is this one in?" or "What's that chord you're playing?", and worse, people sometimes complained that I sang out of tune. In response, I undertook a music degree at Shoreline Community College, which I completed in 2007. (While at college, a song I wrote was chosen as the college's official school song.)
My debut CD, "A Girl With A Guitar" received several positive reviews and considerable radio airplay. I now teach guitar for a living, tour regionally, practice daily and have begun working on a new CD. I am also studying voice with a classical teacher. I love performing live, and I see art as a vehicle for expressing emotions and ideas. If I inspire feeling or positive action, or open the audience's mind to a new point of view, I have succeeded.
To this day, many of my songs still originate from music I hear in my dreams.
In past years, I've performed at the Northwest Folklife Festival, the Oregon Country Fair, the Pike Market Buskers' Festival, the Spokane Fall Folklife Festival, the Seattle Hempfest and the Fremont Fair. I've also toured in Montana, Oregon, Washington and western Canada. I've shared the stage with many fine artists including Baby Gramps, Shoehorn, Amber Tide, Andre Feriante, Artis the Spoonman, Chris Chandler and Jim Page, and have received airplay on a number of community radio stations and syndicated radio programs including Vancouver Co-Op Radio, KBOO (Portland), Northwest Public Radio and Jefferson Public Radio.
